As part of a Pitbull Awareness Month initiative to promote a healthier image of Pitbull-type dogs in South Africa, as well as encourage an increase in Pitbull adoptions, I teamed up with local animal shelters to begin this on-going photo story, Finding Shelter.
Some surrendered, some abandoned, and some never chosen at all, many of these Pitbulls have experienced tough lives of abuse and neglect at the hands of human beings, and yet are more forgiving of us as people than we are of them for being Pitbulls – more forgiving than we probably deserve.
Through portraits of Pitbulls patiently awaiting a forever home, in a place where they’re given a second chance at life, these images aim to challenge preconceptions and misconceptions by portraying gentle, kind, and deserving dogs worthy of human beings being better.
